Last Spring (April 13-June 8) I took a field production certification course at BronxNet every Saturday for eight weeks. Each class was roughly from 10am to 5pm. The course offered through BronxNet’s public access training, is a program open to Bronx residents 18 years old and over. After successfully completing the training, participants can apply to create their own show using the network’s equipment and broadcast it over BronxNet channels, on a one-time or on going basis.

In my field production class my group (9 students in all) learned how to capture footage on location using broadcast cameras and lighting kits and editing the rough footage in Final Cut Pro to make interview segments and mini documentaries.

If you’re interested in creating your own t.v. content, sprucing up your video knowledge and editing skills or adding to your resume for under $100, this course is worth it. As with anything else you want learn and perfect, you’ll need to do some additional practice outside of the class e.g. watch some YouTube videos to fill in the gaps.

Main takeaways: learning to use Final Cut Pro and gaining new language and perspective for thinking about and planning video content.
